Earthquakes shook a Japanese volcano island for days. Then the mountain exploded.

Its west flank burst open first. About ten minutes later, the other side of the volcano erupted too.

That evening, a powerful earthquake tore through the city of Kagoshima across the bay, killing thirty-five people.

Then came the lava. It poured into the sea and filled the strait between the island and the mainland.

Sakurajima was an island no more. It was now joined to the mainland, and it still is today.
